Background

The Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Manual has been set up as the school understands that working in a fully remote environment has its risks, which need to be attended to and monitored by setting up adequate measures and systems in order to prevent the violations of children’s rights.

The policy has been drawn up on the basis of legislation, policy, and guidance that seeks to protect children internationally, following UNICEF’s most recent Industry Guidelines for Online Child Protection (2015), Digital Connectivity (2018), and the report on the State of Children in a Digital World (2017). The institution is committed to implementing all the necessary measures to ensure creating a safe learning environment including all digital platforms associated with the learning process where children’s rights are observed.

Duty of Care

School of Humanity believes that children and young people should never experience abuse of any kind, and should be able to use the internet for education and personal development. Safeguards need to be in place to ensure children are kept safe at all times. With regards to safeguarding, the best interest of learners must come first, which means that if anyone in a school has a safeguarding concern about a learner, they should act immediately.

The schools’ role in safeguarding thus is to prevent harm, protect learners from harm, and support learners when a safeguarding incident occurs. At the same time, the institution acknowledges the Duty of Care towards its employees too and pledges to support anyone facing abuse or allegations.
